Like many Texas sharecroppers, the Barrow family took up residence in makeshift shanties west of the Trinity River when they first moved to Dallas before the Great Depression. Later, the family, including Clyde, who was the fifth of seven children, moved into the back room of a tiny filling station on Singleton Boulevard. The station is vacant but still sits on the corner of Singleton and Borger Street in West Dallas.
