Are there any other options besides the traditional, rather messy way to take impressions of my teeth?
Yes, our office uses the iTero Intraoral Scanner for digital impressions. Rather than using the goopy, uncomfortable impressions you are accustomed to, we can now take a simple, quick digital scan of your mouth. It’s a faster, less painful, and clean process. The biggest advantage is that the results are more accurate and detailed, meaning the final product fits better and lasts longer. We use them for all-porcelain crowns, Invisalign, and snore guards. It’s a win-win for the patient and the dentist because of the more accurate, better-fitting results.
What is DIAGNOdent™?
This is a small radiographic evaluation laser that can “read” a tooth’s density and structure—an incredible evaluation tool for dentists. It helps me determine if what I am seeing on your tooth is a stain or cavity. If I’m able to pinpoint a cavity in its earliest stages, I can treat it easily and less painfully with a small filling, thus conserving more of the tooth’s structure.
What are the advantages of choosing a dentist who uses an intra-oral camera?
For so many years, patients only had X-rays and what their dentist told them to go on when making decisions about dental treatment. Thanks to intra-oral cameras, dentists can now show their patients exactly what is going on in their mouth in real time. It’s a great educational tool because I can show the patient their own mouth—not an X-ray or an example in another photo—and point out where the issues are that need treatment.
What are the advantages of digital X-rays?
These are now, for the most part, standard of care in most dental offices. We can get a clear, accurate picture of the mouth with less radiation to the patient and the dental team, which is safer for everyone.
I am going to need a new crown soon. What is the best option?
The most technologically advanced crown available is the lithium disilicate porcelain crown. It’s a single, strong material that is beautiful and looks natural. For many years, the only option was a gold crown, and then things improved and we used porcelain crowns fused to metal. However, this wasn’t always the best option because the two materials would shear away from each other, separate, and break. And there was always a thin black line at the gum line. When it comes to crowns, dentistry is about light reflection, and this new solid porcelain crown looks very natural in the light.
What is the simplest thing I can do for my oral health using the latest technological advances?
Use an electric toothbrush. We recommend this to all our patients. Here, we use and recommend the Oral B Genius. It has its own app. Every time you brush your teeth, you can put your phone on the mirror with a suction cup, open the app, and it “watches” you while you brush. It can tell you where you need to spend more time brushing or where you’ve spent enough time brushing. A person using a regular toothbrush will have about four to six-thousand brush strokes. The Genius has more than 5,000 movements.
